Hey Nic, I thought of you the other day...was looking for hairsticks. If you don't know what they are, they are for putting up long hair. You can twist your hair up into a knot and then stick something through it and it will stay. I've used pens, pencils, chopsticks, but like most things, using something that is made for what you are doing, or trying to do, usually works a lot better. Anyway, found some beautiful ones made of beautiful woods and call me a goof but whenever I see beautiful wood, I think of you.

Do you know these people sell a three and a half inch piece of wood that is no bigger around than your finger for $55.00? Course, you'd have to make it into a sort of u shape but come on, $55.00? No matter what kind of tree it came from, I bet you'd throw it out when it got down to that little. and hairsticks are nothing but glorified chopsticks which would take a longer scrap to make but probably wouldn't require as much shaping.

I didn't buy any. I'm too cheap. For $55.00 I'll keep using pencils.

But it did make me think of you. and hope you are doing well.

must not be dead after all...there is a new logo up top.

Or maybe that isn't what it's called but whatever it's called I like it, eclectica. The other one always made me think it was like the flames of hell or something and I'd see it and hear this manaical laughter and creepy organ music playing in the background.

I'm doing fine Kel. And U and slx, I hope are doing the same.

I've never made a hairstick. Sounds like a fun thing to do with my scraps. (koa, padunk, purpleheart, teak, canary, walnut, maple, oak, cherry and my all time fav... mahogany). I've saved my scraps since day one. The chit is just too pretty to toss..

Got a link for the hair thingies? Maybe I'll make a few.

I'll give one to timmie to stick into his arse.
(Pls. timmy, no replies or PM's. Just keep using the Preparation H and everything will come out all right.)

yep, we are.

I'll have to find it again, but I will and I'll put it up for you. One site had a bunch of them, in woods like you were talking about, laid out next to each other and it looked almost like a rainbow. I never knew there were pink and yellow woods. Just beautiful and I suppose that was why I thought of you. It is too pretty to toss and I'll tell you what, nic, if they are getting $55.00 for them, you might have your retirement sitting there in your scrap stash. You can be a grouchy old fart making hairsticks and laughing all the way to the bank.

Here you go, nic.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/kskegl/Corkscrew-hairstick-assortment.jpg

This site has lots of them but the wooden ones feel better in your hair, it's like they have more give or flex to them than the plastic ones. I don't and wouldn't use the fancy ones with all the dangles, not my style, but I like those plain wood ones. The $55.00 ones I saw were hair clips, which basically work the same way but there would be more shaping involved. They are fashioned like a U. Think Spanish ladies with the fan thingy in their hair.

well, shit, that wasn't the one, but it is longlocks. This is where the ones in the picture came from.

I just learned yesterday the difference between a logo and a banner. The logo is the image that goes on the top of the forum; usually on the left; though it can be centered as well. Most logos of forums are close to 80 by 200 pixels in size. A banner tends to be around 468 by 60 pixels in size and is for advertising or promoting a site.

When the title of the forum was "The Inferno" I tried to get a logo that matched the name, and I found one at inferno.li (http://www.inferno.li/). There was a large selection of images to choose from when doing a Google image search for "inferno logo". Recently I changed the site's name to the straightforward "3-3-3.org", and afterwards I tried to find a logo to match the new title. But there are few logo images out there with "dionysians", so I had to make one myself. I found some nice background images from RIAA member Sony here (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/visionseries/). I chose to use one called "Blast Center" here (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/images/visions/visions2/full/Blast-Center.jpg) which I thought would make a good logo background. I decided that the logo should have a ratio of width to height that is equal in proportions to the Golden Ratio (http://www.jimloy.com/geometry/golden.htm), which is approximately 1 to 1.618 or .618 to 1. So that gave a target size of 80 by 129 pixels for the logo size. I used Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) to resize the Sony image down to 129 pixels in width while maintaining the aspect ratio of the original, giving me an image that was 129 by 86 pixels. I then inserted text into the image using the Papyrus font, size #13 bold, which fit well into the logo. Finally I trimmed the 6 pixels from the top and bottom so that the height of the logo was 80 pixels, and saved it.

now i feel bad....you do all that work and what's the 1st thing i do when i see it....block the image in firefox....

i just don't like anything that's not relevant.....i do the same at all sites i frequent....some i dice up so much using platypus they don't even resemble their original forms

Thanks, eclectica. Now I know the difference between a banner and a logo. and I still like it.

and nic, only for you would I go intentionally looking for $55.00 hair thingies but here you go.

u shaped ones and I guess some of them it would be more accurate to say w shaped ones. (eclectica's got me feeling a need to be really precise)

I didn't work too hard on the logo and wouldn't bother spending hours trying to acquire the Photoshop program and then figuring out how to use it. I usually just go with the easiest thing that works simply and is available, which in this case was Irfanview. It's a sort of laziness which drives me to seek the simplest answer or solution, but if I really had to I would try to sit down and figure something out.

The logo that is there now is starting to bother me a little because it contrasts too much with the black background. The old logo blended better because it was black on the edges. Perhaps a darker logo with light writing would look better, or some kind of modification made so that the edges would fade to black rather than having a distinct border.

When I went to Senegal in 2003 I saw the guys carving wood figures out of ebony. Several of them sat on the ground and had axes which had a blade and head that was turned perpendicular to the way a regular axe is, meaning that it went from left to right like a T (viewed from the top) and an L (viewed from the side), rather than being parallel with the handle. They had the raw piece of wood between their legs or their feet and chopped towards their bodies, or downwards if the wood was sitting upright, as they carved the wood. I have some ebony from that visit and it is a heavy wood which I think would sink in water. This site here (http://www.musefinds.com/AnAfroKinStore/AfricanTreasures/EbonyCarvings.html) has some ebony pieces much like the ones I saw made in Senegal. I wish I could find a picture somewhere on the internet of the men doing the actual wood carving and the tool that they used.

These are a fair price. it would take about 15 min. for me to make and 5 min. to finish each pair.

This is figuring on making 40 (20 pairs) at a time.

I'll send U some blanks if you want.

kel
2005-10-22, 22:29
40 at a time? whoa. Guess it is all about having the right tools for the job, huh?

Tell you what though, nic, if there is anybody with long hair on your Christmas list, bet they'd love these. They keep your hair out of your way without breaking it like a lot of hair holder things do.

What are blanks?

nicobie
2005-10-24, 00:53
What are blanks?

Blank pieces of wood, these are about 3/4 X 3/4 by 10 inches long.

Check my previous post for wood types.

I can stuff quite a few in a flat rate USPS priority 3 day mail fixed rate envelope if You want to try your hand at carving.

Let me know...

He keeps a real close eye on me when I use sharp objects due to my uncanny ability to hurt myself. You should have seen him come running that time I fired up the chain saw. I swear, I have never seen him move that fast. before or since.

But yes, nic, if I can maybe wangle some kind of a deal with him to whittle at least a couple of hairsticks and the rest he can turn into the fanciest toothpicks you ever saw, yes, please.

and then when we see all the high fashion models wearing hairsticks with pistachio nut embellishments on them next year on all the fashion magazine covers, we'll just smile and say go, nic.

The wood's in the mail.

The fookin' USPS at first wouldn't let me print a label because they think you are under water.

hee hee.

But I got around it.

You rock, nic.

Thank you very, very much.

Maybe I could try that sitting on the ground angling an axe left to right like a T (viewed from the top) and an L (viewed from the side) thing eclectica was talking about. At least slx wouldn't hear me that way, like he did with the chain saw.
