I've limited the amount of users on the OpenNap server to 200, because the computer can't handle any more than that well. It is a computer that is running Windows Millennium with a 233 mhz processor and 96 MB of memory.

Here is a screenshot of the record that I'm aware of: 236,000 files for 200 users. I'm only sharing 743 files myself.

The server is publicly listed on the Napigator server page (http://www.napigator.com/servers/) as well as in the shared .wsx list of WinMX users. Because of that there is much traffic and it would take hours just to get in, unless you have great luck.

What I do for those who request it, is to create a registered account on the server so that even when it is full you can still get into it. You need to send me your desired username and password, and I will register you on the server. If you would like one for your friends as well, let me know.

I notice that a lot of the "opennap" servers are running since yesterday. I'm connected to fifteen networks with 44,000 people. Usually I am connected to five networks with around 12,000 people total. I'm not sure why but sometimes this happens when WinMX isn't working, and people use more of the alternate networks. Also, my dns2go.com service doesn't seem to be working right on my computer, yet the address is still pointing to my IP address.

The latest version of OpenNap was released in September 2001, but the project was continued under OpenNap-NG (http://sourceforge.net/projects/opennap-ng/). I downloaded and am running version 0.46-2, released in February 2003. It has more options than OpenNap. I'll be experimenting with the configuration options. Here is the OpenNap-NG manual (http://opennap-ng.sourceforge.net/manual.html).

Lately I've been getting problems with either my ADSL modem or my router freezing up at times, so the server hasn't been running too well.

After playing around with OpenNap-NG, I find that it has more options, which I like. But one of the ones I'm fond of in OpenNap, max_clones, doesn't work, though it's supposed to. What that option does is prevent more than one person connecting per IP address.

A big problem too with the server is that after about an hour it gives an error message that says the program must close. OpenNap 0.44, the one I've been using for more than a year, runs for weeks at a time without such problems.

Maybe I should give myself a pat on the back, or a handjob will do too...

I happened upon this page of server listings, which is pretty complete because it also has the server rating and the server homepage on it too.
http://serveur.napsterfr.net/open.php

My OpenNap server did well on the ratings. I don't know who did the ratings though, so who knows what it means. Maybe I'll check out vorlon-space.no-ip.info:3456, since it got such a good rating. I usually don't connect to n/a servers because it bothers me not to have a network to list them on on my wsx list.

For a while I've noticed that I get many clones from certain IP addresses. Clones are when there is more one connection attempt to the server per IP address. It seems to me that those connections are some kind of aggressive client attempting to connect to the server, or it could be malicious hacking by the RIAA or other defenders of intellectual property.

A couple of times I got a virus in the e-mail with an address of big@boss.com, which is the Sobig (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sobig.a@mm.html) worm. One time I checked the headers and found it had one of the IP addresses that I often saw attempting to make multiple connections to the server. I did a search on the internet and found that those same IP addresses also had a listing at The Internet Storm Center (http://isc.incidents.org/), which is a site that lists attacks and their origins throughout the world.

Here is a current list of the IP addresses that I've decided since yesterday to block on the OpenNap server.
62.101.125.* - 62.101.126.*
213.140.2.* - 213.140.31.*
213.156.35.* - 213.156.61.*

After blocking those IP addresses the server is running smoother now. All those IP addresses resolve to Fastweb in Vatican City, Rome. Perhaps the Pope disapproves of my operations?

I decided to install a firewall program on the server computer to get more blocking options. I tried out the freeware program Sygate Personal Firewall 5.0 (http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10184369.html?tag=lst-0-1) and I am pleased with it. Mostly I use it to block IP ranges.

Here is the current list of blocked IP addresses on the server. The addresses starting with these numbers were found to have high traffic, aggressive clients, and flooding that adversely affected the server's performance and crashed the internet connection.

The problem with OpenNap is that you are limited in the monitoring ability of the server. I'm testing out SlavaNap with 100 users, and it has more options. I'm just finding out that one of the reasons the OpenNap server wasn't running well, was from the Lopster client. They were mainly coming from the IPs which I had blocked. But the problem with that, is that the blocking was inprecise, because it was the clients which created the problems and not the IPs.

Originally I found that OpenNap ran with fewer resources than Slavanap. I used to be able to run the server for a week at a time without problems. About a year ago that all changed and I started getting problems. I went three different routers and got firewalls but I was still having problems. Under normal operations, OpenNap works better than SlavaNap, but due to all the aggressive clients out there, it is SlavaNap which will work better, because it can control those aggressive clients better.

At slavanap.org (http://www.slavanap.org), Lopster is recommended as a good client (http://www.slavanap.org/clients.php), but from what I saw, it was an overly aggressive client that kept flooding the server with searches. Maybe by good client, they are referring to the user and not the server owner.

Fortunately with SlavaNap I am able to ban clients and monitor the server much better. I am able to see what people are searching for, and I can see how active people are. I banned Lopster from the server.

Look at this screenshot of the activity in the SlavaNap server:
